The Association of Local Social Welfare and Development Officers of the Philippines, Inc. (ALSWDOPI) named Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. as an Outstanding Local Chief Executive of the Philippines for the Provincial Category for Visayas Island.
There was only one awardee per category per island, of which Governor Defensor bagged the award for the Visayas Island.
The award was based on a three-year implementation and delivery of the Defensor administration’s social welfare and development programs, services, innovations, and initiatives from FY 2021-2023 through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office under its chief Sarah Barayuga.
In a letter dated April 13, 2024, ALSWDOPI National President Jhunleymar D. Abella invited Governor Defensor, as one of the awardees, to the Gawad Parangal Awarding Ceremony on May 15, 2024, at the Iloilo Convention Center as part of the 27th National Social Welfare and Development Forum and General Assembly.
“The innovative programs and services of your administration in uplifting the general well-being of the marginalized and vulnerable sectors of your locality are highly commendable, putting your Gawad Parangal nomination for Social Welfare and Development Champions on top of the rank,” Abella stated.
Meanwhile, Mayor Rafael Enrique P. Lazaro of Pototan also won the Outstanding Local Chief Executive of the Philippines for the 1st to 3rd Class Municipality Category for Visayas Island.
The GAWAD Parangal is an annual award conferred by ALSWDOPI to Outstanding Local Chief Executives such as the provincial governor, city/municipal mayor, Sangguniang Panlalawigan, Panglungsod/Bayan Chairperson of Social Services, department head – Local Social Welfare and Development Officers, rank-in-file Social Welfare and Development Officers from provincial/city/municipal offices and ALSWDOPI provincial and city chapters.
