Governor Arthur R. Defensor, Jr. convened with Visayas Container Terminal (VCT) Manager Mike Santos and officials from Iloilo City’s Local Economic Development and Investment Promotions (LEDIP) led by Ms. Velma Jane Lao in a consultation meeting aimed to bolster export development in the region.
The meeting covered updates on VCT operations, economic performance, discussions on export data, backload optimization, and identification of potential exportable products unique to Iloilo.
Governor Defensor emphasized rice production as a priority for agriculture in Iloilo, citing its significant export potential.
“Our main production is the source of the vessel coming in,” said Governor Defensor, on the practical product for backload.
According to the Iloilo Provincial Agriculture Office and Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), rice, pineapple, and banana ranked as the top three agricultural products in the province based on production in 2022.
While stressing the need for corporate capital to boost local production and value-adding goods for exportation, Governor Defensor reiterated the province’s commitment to providing support and insights necessary for fostering export development.
