Iloilo Province Celebrates World Rabies Day, Honors LGUs For Outstanding Rabies Prevention Efforts

The Province of Iloilo celebrated World Rabies Day on September 27, 2024, by emphasizing the importance of rabies prevention and recognizing local government units (LGUs) for their exceptional contributions to combating the disease.

The celebration, spearheaded by the Provincial Veterinarian’s Office-Iloilo and the Iloilo Provincial Health Office, was attended by key stakeholders from various sectors, including mayors, municipal health officers, municipal agriculturists, and municipal livestock technicians.

An advocacy session was led by keynote speaker Dr. Mary Elizabeth G. Miranda, CEO of the Field Epidemiology Training Program and Alumni Foundation Inc. and Team Leader of the “SPEEDIER Rabies Initiative.”

Dr. Miranda’s presentation, “One Health Action for Zero Rabies by 2030,” called for a unified approach among health, veterinary, and environmental sectors to achieve a rabies-free Philippines by 2030.

14 municipalities were also recognized for their best practices in rabies program implementation.

The awarded LGUs were Anilao, Ajuy, Badiangan, Batad, Cabatuan, Calinog, Leganes, Leon, Oton, Pavia, Sta. Barbara, San Enrique, Sara, and Tubungan.
 
The World Rabies Day event showcased the province’s dedication to public health and animal welfare, reinforcing its drive to eliminate rabies and promote responsible pet ownership through coordinated efforts across various sectors.
