In a collaborative effort to enhance local tourism and promote environmental sustainability, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) conducted an ocular inspection of a proposed tree park in Brgy. Batuan Ilaya, Oton, this morning.
The initiative aligns with the TANUM Iloilo program and the MoRProGRes Garden project under the leadership of Governor Toto Defensor.
The PDRRMO team, led by Chief PCOL. Cornelio Salinas and Dr. Fonz Baldonado arrived in Oton at 7:00 AM to meet with Mayor Sofronio Fusin.
The primary goal of the visit was to advance plans for a tree planting activity that aims to create an eco-friendly tourist attraction while also addressing climate change adaptation through disaster risk reduction management.
Upon arrival at the Oton Public Plaza, the team was warmly welcomed by Mayor Fusin and Mr. Malvin Nad of MDRRMO Oton. The proposed site for the tree park is strategically located beside a river system, providing a picturesque backdrop for the envisioned project.
During discussions, Mayor Fusin and Col. Salinas shared their vision of developing a tree park that includes a viewing deck overlooking the river, enhancing the area’s appeal as a tourist destination.
Dr. Baldonado emphasized the importance of aerial mapping and drone footage to assist in planning the layout of the proposed tree park. Col. Salinas further assured that all Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (MDRRMOs) would fully support the project and highlighted the introduction of a “tree-parenting” concept to ensure the successful growth and survival of seedlings.
“This initiative aims to create a greener, safer, and more resilient environment for generations to come,” Col. Salinas stated.
Following the completion of aerial mapping, the PDRRMO team returned to their station by 11:30 AM, marking a significant step forward in Oton’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement.
As this project unfolds, it promises to not only beautify the area but also foster a sense of responsibility among residents towards nurturing their environment.
