EmPower: Mainstreaming Gender In The Iloilo Provincial Renewable Energy Program, Part 1: Gender Sensitivity Orientation

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), through the United Nations Women, has brought a rare and excellent opportunity for the Province of Iloilo to mainstream gender in the Iloilo Provincial Renewable Energy Program.

The PPDO-Gender and Development, together with the PGENRO- Energy Efficiency and Conservation Desk, has successfully conducted the first part of the series focusing on gender sensitivity orientation.

Ms. Cecilia Iguiron-Fantastico, Gender and Development Specialist, provided her expertise through the topics: Module 1 included talks on development, gender, inequality, & GAD principles; and Module 2: gender mainstreaming, PGNs & SGIs, and GAD Policy Handles.

Present in the activity were members of the Provincial GAD TWG, Provincial School Board, HMO, PHO, PEO, GSO, PSDO, LEDIP, PCDO, & PDRRMO, and PPO.

Furthermore, women’s groups such as the Regional Gender and Development Committee Region-VI, Kalipunan sa Liping Pilipina (KALIPI), UGSAD Regional Gender Resource Center for Western Visayas, as well as the Provincial Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), LGUs (Cabatuan & Tigbauan), Iloilo Caucus of Development Non-Government Organizations, Inc. (ICODE), and representatives from the Iloilo Electric Cooperatives I,II, & III, took part in this activity.

The EmPower: Women for Climate-Resilient Societies program is a collaboration between UNEP and UN Women that aims to accelerate gender-responsive and human rights-based climate actions across Asia and the Pacific.

One of its objectives is to mainstream gender into national and sub-national energy policies, plans, and programs. Building on the energy sector initiatives of the Iloilo Provincial Government, EmPower seeks to support gender mainstreaming within the Iloilo Province Renewable Energy Program through a series of capacity-building workshops and consultations.
