Coastal communities in Tigbauan, Guimbal, and San Joaquin are set to enjoy bigger catches and more efficient fishing operations with the distribution of materials for 10 payaos (fish aggregating devices) by the Iloilo Provincial Government through the Provincial Agriculture Office.
The assistance covers 5 units for Tigbauan, 4 for Guimbal, and 1 for San Joaquin, with materials including 400 bamboo poles, 68 rolls of plastic binder, 34 rolls of PE rope, and other essential components for fabrication and deployment.
Payaos work by attracting and concentrating fish, enabling fisherfolk to catch more in less time and with lower fuel costs, while also easing pressure on nearshore fishing grounds by encouraging offshore fishing.
This initiative not only boosts livelihoods but also supports sustainable marine resource management in Southern Iloilo’s fishing communities.
