In a continuing effort to safeguard marine ecosystems and protect the livelihood of law-abiding fisherfolk, six individuals were apprehended for engaging in illegal dynamite fishing off the coast of Sitio Naborot, Barangay Buenavista, Carles on August 4, 2025.
All six are residents of the said barangay.
The joint seaborne patrol, led by the Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force and Carles Municipal Police Station, intercepted two vessels approximately 8.5 kilometers from shore.
The operation led to the discovery of prohibited fishing gear, including air compressors, fabricated clippers, diving goggles, and improvised scope nets commonly used in destructive fishing practices that severely damage coral reefs and marine habitats.
This proactive enforcement is part of the provincial government’s commitment to ensure the sustainability of the fishing industry and to protect the livelihood of coastal communities that rely on legal and responsible fishing practices.
By stopping illegal fishers, the authorities are helping to secure a healthy marine environment where local fishermen can thrive for generations to come.
The arrested suspects are now facing charges under Section 92 of Republic Act 8550, as amended by RA 10654.
Confiscated equipment remains in the custody of the Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force, and fish samples will be examined by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 6 to aid in the investigation.
