The “Turista sa Barangay” Core Team from the province of Iloilo led by Provincial Tourism Officer Bombette Marin has commenced the scoping process of the Pan de Azucar Island in the municipality of Concepcion in preparation for its declaration as an eco-tourism destination.
The team was composed of representatives from the Provincial Culture, Arts, History and Tourism Office; Provincial Planning and Development Office: Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office; Provincial Health Office; Provincial Agriculture Office, Provincial Engineer’s Office; Local Economic Development and Investment Promotions Center; Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office; and Public Information and Community Affairs Office.
The scoping conducted on August 8, 2025 at Barangay Tambaliza Gym covered comprehensive assessments of four major sectors – economic, environmental, social, and governance – which are vital in ensuring the sustainable development of the island without sacrificing its unique biodiversity.
The participants are village leaders and sectoral members from barangays Tambaliza, Macatunao, and Taloto-an which comprise the entire Pan de Azucar.
The team assessed each barangay’s potential as well as the pressing issues and concerns affecting the tourism sector which need interventions from the provincial government.
Marin sought the commitment of the local officials and stakeholders in ensuring the success of the endeavor which is expected to bring long-term benefits to the island’s tourism sector as well as economic value to the community.
“Are we all on board in the transformation of Pan de Azucar into an eco-tourism destination? We need the full support of the community and all sectors,” the tourism officer said.
Pan de Azucar Island is home to famous eco-tourism sites such as the Mt. Manaphag which is one of the highest peaks in the province, and the Lumpatan rock formation. It also takes pride in its pristine beaches and diving sites, among others.
The declaration of Pan de Azucar as an eco-tourism spot aligns with the Turista sa Barangay program of Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. which seeks to develop the potential of the community as point of care for tourists. It also aims to harness the province’s tourism potential through a barangay-based approach.
