Iloilo, MetPower Explore Advanced Solid Waste Management Facility

Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. met today with top executives of MetPower Venture Partners, a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC), to discuss the establishment of an advanced solid waste management facility which aims to upgrade the province’s waste disposal and promote circular economy.

The meeting was attended by MetPower President and CEO Jose Maria “Jonji” P. Madara, MetPower Iloilo Waste Recovery Joint Venture Corporation Project Manager Loleny C. Nicor. Joining them are PGENRO chief Atty Cesar Emmanuelle Buyco, Jr., PGENRO Supervising Environmental Management Specialist Mitzi Peñaflorida, Provincial Planning and Development Office assistant head Valme Lujan, LEDIP Center Chief Aulynn Yue Sin, and Iloilo CIty General Services Office head Engr. Neil Ravena.

The proposed Public-Private Partnership aims to properly manage the residual wastes produced by the 43 municipalities in the province. Based on the report of PGENRO, an average of 80 tons per day of residual wastes from the 35 municipalities are being disposed at the integrated waste management facility in Passi City.

The proposal is to come-up with a modular advanced facility that can convert wastes into renewable energy through refuse-derived fuel (RDF) that can augment our energy source. Not only does it reduce the environmental impact of municipal wastes but also promote sustainable energy practice.

This move is also part of the provincial government’s commitment of adopting circular economy which aims to minimize wastes and promote sustainable use of our natural resources.

Governor Defensor said the provincial government is willing to provide a lot for the construction of the facility.

Meanwhile, the city of Iloilo has already broke ground its integrated waste management facility in Barangay Ingore, La Paz in partnership with MetPower.
