Iloilo Guv Welcomes Korean Ambassador Lee Sang-Hwa

Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Philippines Lee Sang-Hwa paid a courtesy visit on Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. today, January 26, at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol.

They explored strengthening bilateral cooperation between the province of Iloilo and South Korea in the areas of infrastructure, education, tourism, information technology, and manpower development, among others.

Ambassador Lee lauded the Jalaur River Muti-Purpose Project Stage II which was funded under the Official Development Assistance (ODA) of South Korea government through the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF).

He said the JRMP II is “a game changer” and “a very good example of a successful and effective flood control project.”

He also expressed optimism regarding the upcoming Panay-Guimaras-Negros Bridge, another landmark project backed by the Korean government.

Meanwhile, Governor Defensor revisited plans for a direct Iloilo-Seoul flight, noting that while the pandemic initially stalled the initiative, it remains a priority for regional connectivity. Iloilo is a home to 500 Koreans and the direct flight would help boost tourism and trade.

On a personal note, the Governor shared his affinity for Korean culture, mentioning that Korean cuisine is a staple in his household and that he enjoys cooking it himself.

Joining Ambassador Lee during his visit are the representatives from the Philippines-Korea Economic Council and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Iloilo Chapter, Inc. (PCCI Iloilo) led by President Fulbert Woo.
