The Iloilo provincial government is intensifying its campaign against the recurring issue of illegal disposal of wastes along the road, in vacant spaces, and waterways.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. convened the environmental advocates during the Limpyo Iloilo Stakeholders Summit today at Days Hotel Iloilo to discuss measures and address the unauthorized dumping of wastes province-wide.
Based on the trash audit of the Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office, the collected wastes primarily consist of special wastes (such as masks and diapers), glass and PET bottles, plastic wrappers, food packaging, and aluminum cans. Other prevalent items include single-use utensils, stirrers, cups, and cigarette butts.
Majority of the wastes originated from households and neighboring barangays, or are illegally discarded by public transport commuters.
The governor called upon the mayors and barangay officials to strictly enforce the solid waste management strategy – from collection, segregation, to treatment.
He particularly enjoined barangay leaders to establish a comprehensive collection system, emphasizing that tracking is essential in identifying the primary sources of wastes.
“Dapat may ara kita nga sistema sa pagcollect. Bululigan ta ini tanan sa aton nga masarangan para makita gid naton kun diin ini nagahalin ang mga basura,” he said.
Recognizing that the local government units face varying challenges, Defensor assured support in upgrading the solid waste management facilities of municipalities.
The provincial government will also provide financial assistance to help barangays procure CCTV cameras in areas prone to illegal dumping to strengthen their monitoring and surveillance.
